A P&ID is a document of record. Regulations require it to reflect as-is plant conditions – every vessel, every design condition, every nozzle placement. What it can't tell you is whether that equipment still holds.
That question arrives on a schedule. A unit built decades ago comes up for inspection. A feedstock change shifts operating pressure on three reactors, and every affected vessel needs a fresh look before the change is approved. The conditions are documented in the P&ID. The proof lives in mechanical analysis, in a different tool. It gets rebuilt by hand, against a deadline, from data that already exists. Transpose one pressure value incorrectly and it can cost days of rework, often surfacing late, when both documents are nearly stamped.
So how do you prove it holds without entering it all twice? Reuse what's already there. That works because Octave solutions are data-centric. The P&ID isn't just a drawing of a process, it's a data model of one. A drawing gives you geometry. A data model gives you conditions you can carry into analysis. The conditions captured in Octave Facets P&ID (formerly Smart P&ID) can be reused inside Octave Aspect Pressure Vessel (formerly PV Elite) rather than re-entered and become a code-compliant calculation against ASME VIII, EN 13445 and more. Octave Technical Product Managers David Kaiser and Hunter Lavish will walk the full path, from process definition to a result you can defend.
For process and mechanical engineers running aging assets under tighter scrutiny, this is the workflow behind recertification and management of change you can defend at inspection.
Here's what you'll learn:
- Where the handoff between process and mechanical work breaks down, and what it costs in rework and review-cycle delay
- How data captured in Facets P&ID is reused in Aspect Pressure Vessel rather than re-entered by hand
- What a defensible technical basis looks like when an inspector asks how a vessel was recertified, using recertification and management of change as worked examples
